Creative Business Deals Build Local Employment

As of November 1, Atrio‘s membership for their Medicare supplement insurance expanded from under 6,000 to 12,000 through an agreement with Willamette Valley Health Partners (Willamette Valley purchased a portion of Atrio, and Atrio has taken on the administration of their insurance functions). The new deal was closed by Atrio’s new CEO Ruth Rogers Bauman and allowed Atrio to hire an additional 12 employees. Atrio is continuing to consider new markets for its insurance management services.

Linen Services, owned by Mike Fassler, has been expanding (now up to 12 full- and part-time employees). Much of that growth was driven by a successful bid to take on Mercy Medical Center’s primary linen contract. Mercy agreed to pay a significant portion of the contract up front, financing new capacity for Linen Services, in return for a long-term discount. The net result was savings for Mercy and the addition of 10 jobs that were previously outside the County. Linen Services is at (541) 643-2200.

Manufacturing in America … & Douglas County

There has been a lot of press lately about the continuted strength of manufacturing in America. The fairly steady long-term decline in employment in the area does not thel the whole picture. Consider how few people are employed in agriculture in the U.S. today compared to 100 years ago–but output is still enormous and remains a critical strength in the U.S. economy.

Anyway, a couple links for those of us who care about manufacturing:

1. A great video by FCC Furniture showing first-class manufacturing in Douglas County in 2011.

2. A recent study explaining why the off-shoring trend in manufacturing has begun to reverse.

3. Joel Kotkin (one of my favorite journalists) has two recent articles: one targetting some of the U.S. regions that have seen particular strength and another arguing the key challenge going forward is workforce.

Twenty-five Douglas County-based businesses are now registered on the Northwest Connectory. This is a resource, co-sponsored by State of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest Defense Coalition, to help build connections in the regional supply chain.

November Event Highlights:

Over this past month, a number of public presentations on economic conditions around Douglas County identified promising developments. . .

At the Roseburg Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual economic forecast, Fred Dickson of D.A. Davidson pointed to 8 long-term economic drivers of economic growth, a number of which southern Oregon is well-positioned to take advantage of, including:

  • Water and water resource development, treatment and transmission
  • Food production and distribution
  • Security needs–especially data security
  • Lifestyle/leisure products and services

At the Lunch Bunch’s Snapshots for Success, Dave Larecy of Con-Vey, Hal Ball of Orenco Systems, Inc., and Mick Crowe, FCC Commercial Furniture, all reported significant recent hiring efforts–and were optimistic about the possibilities for more to come.

At the Oregon Trails meeting, a panel of experts in small business lending and equity investment shared a wealth of expertise. The bottom line: credit terms are changing and access to credit has definitely become more challenging, but solutions are out there for the persistent and well-prepared small business. See the Business Financing Programs section on our website for resources.

ORENCO Wins Major Water Treatment Award

Orenco Systems–based in Sutherlin, Oregon–is a leader in sustainable wastewater collection and treatment solutions. The company was awarded this month the Water Environment Federation’s (WEF’s) prestigious Innovative Technology Award for the nutrient-removal configuration of its AdvanTex® Treatment System.

The AdvanTex Treatment System is ideal for unsewered communities or commercial properties needing a cost-effective, easily-maintained, and reliable solution for environmentally sustainable treatment of wastewater flows.  The treated effluent can be disposed of subsurface, used for irrigation or re-use, or permitted for surface discharge, meeting the most stringent requirements. More than 25,000 AdvanTex units have been installed throughout North America and in more than a dozen countries worldwide,

“We are honored to be the recipient of the prestigious award from WEF for our AdvanTex System,” said Grant Denn, sales manager.  “We strive to develop and bring the most innovative solutions to the market, and are encouraged by the acceptance and recognition that these efforts have brought.  And with WEF’s contribution to the wastewater industry, we feel that WEFTEC is an excellent forum in which to display our technologies.”

The award was presented at WEFTEC 20011 in October. On the show floor, Orenco be displayed a 21-ft model of its award-winning AdvanTex System, the AX-Max™. The 21-ft AX-Max is a completely pre-packaged, fully-plumbed wastewater treatment system serving up to 75 persons. Orenco also displayed its TeleComm™ (TCOM) monitoring system.  TCOM control panels are affordable, integrated telemetry panels that include digital controls, data logging, and remote access and control in real time.  They’re ideal for stand-alone monitoring and control systems, or they can be integrated into other SCADA systems.  The TCOM system at WEFTEC will be used for live, hands-on demonstrations.
