Industrial tour focused on distribution centers in Douglas County

Twenty-five local business people from a variety of backgrounds participated in a tour of four local companies heavily involved in distribution on October 30. The tour was arranted by The Partnership for Economic Development in Douglas County and co-sponsored by Umpqua Community College.

The four tour stops were and Harbor Wholesale (both based in Green), WinCo Foods in Myrtle Creek, and Ingram Book Company (Oak Creek Industrial Park). The participants viewed each operation and had opportunities to interact with managers at each plant. There was a wide variety of approaches to picking, assembling batches, and shipping among the four sites, which varied in size from about thirty to over one hundred, and were covering areas from the Pacific Northwest to international markets. Two of the stops (WinCo Foods and Ingram Book Company) featured facilities that have been developed on county-owned industrial parks with excellent I-5 highway access.
